The coronavirus infection rate in Carmarthenshire is now at its lowest level since September 2020.

According to the data published by Public Health Wales on Friday, the infection rate for the county as a whole is 42.9 per 100,000 people. This is for the seven days up to February 28, a period which saw 81 confirmed new cases from 1,752 tests – a positive proportion rate of 4.6%.

In terms of new cases in the most recent 24-hour period, up until Thursday morning, there were nine confirmed from a total of 300 tests – a positive proportion of 3.0% .

The infection rate across Carmarthenshire remains lower than the overall rate across Wales ( 50.9 ) and has fallen below 50 for the first time since the end of September. It has dropped by almost 30 in a week, with last Friday’s rate (based on the seven days up to February 21) coming in at 71.0 .

A week before that (based on the seven days up to February 14) it was slightly higher at 72.0 , while a week earlier (based on the seven days up to February 7), the rate was 98.5 . The current rate is just over 5% of what it was before the current Alert Level 4 lockdown was implemented in the days before Christmas, when it reached a peak of more than 740 .

The part of the county with the highest current infection rate is the area of Carmarthen North, while infection rates in several areas have not been calculated due to too few cases.

Hospital admissions

In the seven days up to February 28, there were 621 admissions at Hywel Dda hospitals – 14 of those people had tested positive for coronavirus.

A total of 399 people were tested for coronavirus upon admission to hospital, of which fiver eturned positive tests.

Vaccinations

More than 120,000 people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire have now received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, and more than 8,000 have had a second dose, Hywel Dda University Health Board has confirmed.

According to data up to Wednesday (March 3) 56,714 people (30%) in Carmarthenshire have had a first dose, and 4,345 (2.3%) have had a second dose.

In Ceredigion, 21,780 people (30%) have had a first dose, and 1,348 (1.9%) have had a second dose.

In Pembrokeshire, 39,146 people (31.1%) have had a first dose, and 2,488 (2%) have had a second dose.

The health board has also confirmed when people in priority groups 5 to 9 will receive the vaccine.

Residents in priority groups 5 to 9 can expect to receive their vaccine as follows:

Group 5 – people aged 65 to 69 years: delivered by GP practices between 15 February and 12 March Group 6 – people aged 16 to 64 years with underlying health conditions and unpaid carers: delivered by GP practices between 22 February and 4 April
Group 7 – people aged 60 to 64 years: delivered by mass vaccination centres starting 8 March
Group 8 – people aged 55 to 59 years: delivered by mass vaccination centres starting 22 March
Group 9 – people aged 50 to 54 years: delivered by mass vaccination centres starting 5 April

The health board currently has mass vaccination centres located in Aberystwyth, Cardigan, Haverfordwest, Tenby, Llanelli and Carmarthen.

A second mass vaccination centre in Carmarthen will open on Monday, at the United Counties Showground on the outskirts of town.
