GMB present Kate Garraway has laid bare her husband’s fight for survival in a devastating documentary about his battle with coronavirus.

The 53-year-old was admitted to hospital at the end of March 2020 after suffering symptoms of the virus.

Now, a year on, he is still in hospital, and the footage she started taking early in his treatment has become a devastating diary of the battle he’s faced against Covid-19, a pandemic which has clamed the lives of more than 126,000 in the UK in the last year.

Early on in the documentary, Garraway says Draper, who spend several months in a coma, is the “sickest person the team of doctors have treated that’s lived”.

But in Kate Garraway Finding Derek, which went out tonight (Tuesday) at 9pm on ITV, viewers see the strength of the woman who they knew best from breakfast television.

The footage, which is intimate and deeply personal, shows Garraway and her erudite children – Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11 – deal with life not only with a parent absent from the home, but stuck in hospital for months with no idea what will happen.

Over the course of a year, Draper, a former political lobbyist during the late 1990s,, has been in an induced coma, suffered from kidney failure, liver and pancreatic damage.

He also has holes in his lungs from pneumonia, has lost eight stone in weight and remains in a prolonged disorder of consciousness.

Viewers heard Derek saying: “Kate, there’s no way out. There’s no way out.

“I’ve got to the point where I just think f*** it. Just f*** it.”

“As in die?” Kate asks, and he replies: “Yes… I don’t know how to cope, I don’t know how to cope.”

She tells him: “You don’t know how to cope with it. OK. now you feel like you’re trapped in your head and it’s terrifying.

“I will find a way to make it better. I promised you that I would save you and I’m going to save you, I will find a way, but you just have to hang in there.”

During the rest of the programme, Kate acknowledges that thousands of other families have gone through similar issues, and meets sufferers of Covid-19 from community nurse Orli – who after a year is still experiencing life changing symptoms of Long-Covid – to Julie whose husband Steve has not regained consciousness after contracting the disease.
