The true number of deaths of people with Covid-19 is two thirds higher than is being reported daily by Public Health Wales, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics suggest.
Weekly data published by the ONS includes deaths in care homes, hospices and at homes that are not included in the daily figures put out by the Welsh Government.
In the most recent figures which only cover the year up to April 25, the figures from the ONS show that there had been 1,016 deaths in Wales where Covid-19 was recorded on the death certificate.
That is 60% higher than the total of 632 deaths reported on the same day by Public Health Wales in its daily update of lab-confirmed deaths in hospitals.
Today, Tuesday, April 28, Public Health Wales reported the lab-confirmed death toll had reached 817. Yet the true figure is likely to be more than 1,300.
The fuller figures from ONS for the year to April 25 include 227 deaths in care homes that were not included in the Public Health Wales daily data at that stage.
They include
58 deaths with Covid-19 at home 716 deaths in hospitals 227 deaths in care homes 5 deaths in hospices 9 deaths in other settings
Doctors are able to include Covid-19 on a death certificate even if it has not been confirmed in a laboratory if they believe it is relevant to an understanding of the patient’s symptoms when they died.
Merthyr Tydfil saw the biggest proportion of deaths taking place in care homes, with 14 out of 28, or 50%.
Overall, Covid-19 was a factor in 9% of deaths that occurred across Wales up to April 17, although the figure stood at 16.6% of deaths (or 166 out of 1,002) in Cardiff.
Across Wales, for deaths registered in the week ending April 17, 409 mentioned coronavirus on the death certificate, up from 304 the week before.
That represented more than a third (35%) of all deaths registered in the region in that week.
