A father has died after contracting Covid-19 when he went into hospital with heart problems.

Douglas George Bressington, 81, died on April 17 at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.

Douglas, who lived in Porthcawl with his wife Joan, 79, died five days after contracting the virus. His daughter Caroline Jones, 48, from Carmarthen, said the family were unsure what to do after he had heart pains.

She said the family were reluctant to send him to the hospital due to the pandemic but called the ambulance who transported him to hospital.

Caroline said: “My mum was distraught and in bits but we had no choice but to send him to hospital due to chest pains he had.

“He went in to hospital on April 3 and also had tests for Covid-19 and tested negative. It was such a relief for us because we were obviously scared he may contract it while at the hospital.

“My dad went in and had community pneumonia but he was recovering well. He was responding well and we spoke to him on FaceTime.”

A week after he tested negative for Covid-19, Douglas began showing symptoms and had a high temperature.

Doctors informed the family he had tested positive for coronavirus and would be moved to the designated Covid-19 ward.

“It makes it so hard because you can’t even go to see him. The doctors are so busy and it was so hard getting in contact with him.

“We were then informed that he had passed away and it was devastating for us as a family because he meant so much to us. I’m so proud to call him my dad.”

Douglas, who moved to Porthcawl from the Rhondda in 2006, was popular figure in the community and had asked his family for a big funeral where all of his relatives and friends would be present.

But Caroline said: “We won’t be able to give him his dream funeral and it’s devastating. He knew so many people and had so many friends.”

“My mum is obviously devastated and we can’t go to see her which makes things worse. My sister travelled to her home yesterday to have a cup of tea with her standing outside her house to show her some support.

“He was such a popular man especially at the local church so tributes have been pouring in on Facebook and we’re asking people to submit pictures and memories of him.

“When all this is over, we’ll give him the send off he deserves.”

Douglas had also been a member of the Porthcawl Powerboat and Ski club for 40 years. A tribute on its Facebook page said: “It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Doug. Douglas Bressington was a long time member of the club, had served on the committee for many years, had been the club safety officer, steward and recently made a life long honorary member.

“I’m sure many of you will have many fond memories of Doug from his more than 40 years of club activities.

“Our thoughts go to his wife Joan and his family at this very difficult time.”
